Definition Of Fine Pitch Nuts And Thread Parameters Of Fine Pitch Threads

There are various types of nuts, among which fine pitch nuts are a common category of threaded fasteners. Fine pitch nuts are suitable for connecting high-speed rotating or moving components. Due to the small helix angle of threads, they deliver excellent anti-loosening performance after tightening and locking. In addition, fine pitch nuts are widely adopted to adjust the axial clearance of machinery equipment, especially for preloading spindle bearings and trimming axial clearance on machine tools.

When using fine pitch nuts, their tensile load and mechanical strength must be fully considered. Improper selection or non-standard operation will shorten the service life of fine pitch nuts and bring unpredictable risks to equipment maintenance. Mastering complete thread parameters of fine pitch nuts helps avoid assembly errors and supports troubleshooting remedies.

1. Conventional Detection Methods for Fine Pitch Threads

Measurement of Thread Included Angle The thread included angle is also known as thread profile angle. It can be measured by calculating the flank angle, which refers to the included angle between the thread flank and the plane perpendicular to the thread axis. During measurement, multiple sampling points are taken along straight segments on both sides of the thread profile, and the least square method is used for linear fitting of sampling points to calculate the thread profile angle.

Measurement of Pitch Pitch is defined as the axial distance from any point on one thread to the corresponding point on the adjacent thread. Measurement must be carried out parallel to the thread axis.

Measurement of Thread Pitch Diameter The pitch diameter of thread refers to the perpendicular distance from the pitch line to the thread axis. The pitch line is an imaginary generatrix of a cylinder, serving as the critical dimension controlling thread fit accuracy.

2. Composition of Automatic Thread Inspection System

2.1 Hardware System

The automatic thread parameter inspection system adopts a PC-based framework. Its hardware consists of an illumination system, CCD camera and optical imaging system, image acquisition card, image processing unit, mechanical inspection system, electric control system and other components.

Inspection workflow: After illumination by the lighting system, the CCD camera and optical system capture thread images of fasteners. Digital images are transmitted to a computer via the image acquisition card. The computer processes digital images with corresponding algorithms to calculate key thread parameters including profile angle, pitch and pitch diameter, compares measured values with standard dimensions, and calculates dimensional deviations.

2.2 Software System

The software system for automatic thread parameter measurement mainly includes the system control module and image processing module.

System control module: Completes overall initialization, including configuration of the image acquisition card and standard thread parameters; realizes image capture, storage of 8-bit grayscale images and image caching in memory.

Image processing module: Contains multiple algorithms: preprocessing algorithms for noise reduction and enhancement of thread contour edges; edge detection and extraction algorithms for contour identification; system calibration algorithms for measuring actual dimensions from digital images; algorithms dedicated to calculating all thread parameters.

3. Inspection Results

A machine vision-based automatic thread inspection system is developed to measure the thread included angle, pitch, pitch diameter and other parameters of standard thread samples. All measured parameters fall within allowable tolerance ranges. Featuring high efficiency and reliable stability, machine vision inspection is verified applicable to mass production quality inspection.

4. Basic Profile of Unified Screw Thread

The contour shape of a thread on the longitudinal plane passing through the thread axis is defined as the thread profile. The included angle between flanks of two adjacent thread teeth is the thread profile angle. Metric general connecting threads adopt triangular profiles with a standard profile angle of 60°.

5. Table of Common Metric Fine Pitch Thread Specifications and Tapping Drill Sizes

The first column lists metric thread specifications, followed by coarse pitch, drill diameter for coarse tapping, two optional fine pitches. Subsequent columns correspond to UNC, UNF imperial thread specifications, along with matching drill diameters. Metric threads dominate domestic manufacturing. The drill diameter for metric tapping equals the size of the drill bit to be used. Taking M48 as an example: coarse pitch = 5 mm, tapping drill diameter = 43 mm.

6. Distinction between Coarse Pitch Threads and Fine Pitch Threads

Definition of coarse pitch thread: For a fixed nominal diameter, a coarse pitch thread adopts the maximum allowable standard pitch. Threads with smaller pitches under the same nominal diameter are defined as fine pitch threads.

Example: The nominal diameter M12 supports pitches of 1.75 mm, 1.5 mm and 1.25 mm. M12×1.75 is the coarse pitch thread, whose pitch value can be omitted during marking. M12×1.5 and M12×1.25 are fine pitch threads, which must be fully marked with pitch. All above rules apply to metric general threads.

Advantages of fine pitch threads: Small helix angle brings strong self-locking and anti-loosening capacity, suitable for thin-wall parts, precision adjustment and vibration-prone working conditions. Disadvantage: Shallow thread profile leads to lower shear strength compared with coarse pitch threads. Coarse pitch threads feature universal compatibility, easy machining and disassembly, making them the first choice for most general equipment.
