Hardness Grades And Application Advantages Of Hexagon Socket Bolts

Hexagon socket bolts, also known as hexagon socket head cap screws, are cylindrical fasteners with an internal hexagon drive head. The commonly used grades of hexagon socket bolts include 4.8, 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9. Different working conditions and structural equipment require bolts of different strength grades. Selecting a reasonable grade can give full play to the mechanical performance of fasteners and ensure the overall assembly strength and operational safety of equipment.

1. Strength Grade Classification of Hexagon Socket Bolts

Hexagon socket bolts are classified according to mechanical indicators such as material hardness, tensile strength and yield strength to adapt to different load conditions. In the industry, they are divided into ordinary-strength and high-strength grades. Grade 4.8 belongs to ordinary hexagon socket bolts, while grades 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9 are defined as high-strength hexagon socket bolts. Standard Grade 12.9 bolts are normally black-finished with knurled heads and oiled surfaces.
Hexagon socket bolts used for steel structure and mechanical assembly cover multiple performance grades including 3.6, 4.6, 4.8, 5.6, 6.8, 8.8, 9.8, 10.9 and 12.9. Bolts of Grade 8.8 and above are manufactured from medium-carbon steel or low-alloy steel and undergo quenching and tempering heat treatment to enhance mechanical properties, which are defined as high-strength bolts. All other non-heat-treated low-grade bolts are classified as ordinary bolts.
The performance grade mark consists of two groups of numbers, representing the nominal tensile strength and yield ratio of the bolt material respectively. This is a unified international standard. Bolts with the same performance grade exhibit consistent mechanical properties regardless of material differences or manufacturing origins, so engineering design can be conducted purely based on strength grades.

2. Mechanical Properties of Each Bolt Grade

Grade 4.6 Bolt Performance: The nominal tensile strength is 400 MPa, the yield ratio is 0.6, and the nominal yield strength is 240 MPa.
Grade 10.9 High-Strength Bolt Performance: After professional heat treatment, the nominal tensile strength reaches 1000 MPa with a yield ratio of 0.9, and the nominal yield strength reaches 900 MPa.
Different strength grades differ in raw materials, processing techniques and heat treatment processes, with prices increasing accordingly. In industrial applications, Grade 4.8, 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9 hexagon socket bolts are the most widely used.
