What are the differences between common 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel in material?

Stainless steel is now widely used in our lives, ranging from aerospace equipment to small pots and pans, stainless steel can be seen everywhere. However, there are many categories, and many friends have a headache in choosing. For example, our common 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel, so today Xiaorui will take you to understand the difference between the two.

The difference between 304 and 316

304 and 316 are American Standards, 3 stands for 300 series steel, and the last two digits are the serial number. 304 Chinese brand is 06Cr19Ni9 (containing less than 0.06% C, more than 19% chromium, more than 9% nickel); 316 Chinese brand is 06Cr17Ni12Mo2 (containing less than 0.06% C, more than 17% chromium, more than 12% nickel , more than 2% molybdenum).

I believe you can also see from the grades that the chemical components contained in 304 and 316 are different, and the biggest difference caused by the different components is the difference in acid and corrosion resistance. Compared with 304, 316 has increased nickel Ni element, and added molybdenum Mo element. Adding nickel can further improve the durability, mechanical properties, and oxidation resistance of stainless steel. The molybdenum element can improve the atmospheric corrosion, especially the atmospheric corrosion containing chloride. Therefore, in addition to the performance characteristics of 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel is also resistant to special medium corrosion, which can improve the corrosion resistance to chemical hydrochloric acid and ocean, and improve the corrosion resistance to brine halogen solution.

Application range of 304 and 316

304 stainless steel is widely used, such as kitchen utensils and utensils, architectural decoration, food industry, agriculture, ship parts, bathroom, auto parts and so on.

The price of 316 stainless steel is higher than that of 304. Compared with 304, 316 stainless steel has stronger acid resistance and better stability. 316 stainless steel is mainly suitable for chemical, dye, paper, acetic acid, fertilizer and other production equipment, food industry and facilities in coastal areas, and products with special requirements for resistance to intergranular corrosion.

For daily life, 304 stainless steel can already meet our needs, and 304 is also a stainless steel material that fully meets food standards.
